SF6 Gas Insulated Lines (GIL) application guide

One of the challenges in the design of a power plant substation is how to maximize its potential while maintaining safe conditions for workers and the surrounding environment.

Explore the benefits and technical insights of SF6 GIL with our comprehensive Gas Insulated Lines Application Guide. The greatly reduced electric and magnetic fields, along with the superior dielectric strength of SF6 gas, enable SF6 Gas Insulated Lines (GIL) to offer a highly compact solution for power transmission. For instance, the outside diameter of the 362kV rated GIL design measures just 15 inches (381mm) per phase. With a phase spacing of 22 inches (559mm) center to center, a typical 362kV GIL bus circuit requires a trench width of only 6 feet (1.85m).

This compact right-of-way requirement is less than 10% of what conventional transmission lines would demand, yet the GIL system can transmit in excess of 3000MVA. Moreover, GIL’s compact design is more adaptable to tight space limitations compared to typical high voltage cable systems because GIL lines can navigate sharp corners with ease, unlike the large radius bends required by cables. Additionally, the substantial current carrying capacity of GIL allows for combining outputs from multiple generator step-up transformers into feeder circuits, resulting in more compact transmission line and Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) arrangements than those required by cable systems.

Ideal for engineers and industry professionals, this guide offers essential information on compact power transmission solutions. Download the SF6 Gas Insulated Lines (GIL) Application Guide to enhance your understanding and optimize your project planning.
